What is a calculator?

Calculators are electronic devices that can perform mathematical tasks. The calculator has historical precursors in the abacus and slide rule. The first electronic calculator appeared in the early 1960s and pocket calculators became available in the 1970s. They became affordable to most in the 1980s and by the 1990s, calculators were being used by students in maths classes.
