Foolscap & A4 Suspension Files for your Filing Cabinet
What are Suspension files?
Suspension files are an integral part of any office storage solution, they enable large amounts of paper to be filed away into folders in filing cabinets; and create an easy and efficient system for looking up paperwork. The two main suspension file sizes are foolscap and A4: foolscap suspension files are slightly larger than A4 suspension files.
Suspension File Sizes - Foolscap vs. A4
Suspension files rest on parallel runners (or rails). The distance between these runners determines whether you need A4 suspension files or Foolscap suspension files:
A4 suspension files sit on runners that are approximately 345mm apart. The overall width of the file is approximately 345mm with the folder being approximately 300mm.
Foolscap suspension files sit on runners that are approximately 400mm apart. The overall width of the file is approximately 400mm with the folder being approximately 360mm.
Do I need Lateral files or Suspension files?
Vertical suspension files (Standard suspension files) are accessed from the top and usually have tabs or labels on the top. These are generally used in the type of filling storage that you would pull out like a filing Cabinet or pedestal.
Lateral suspension files are accessed from the side and have their tabs on the side for easy reference and access. These are usually stored in a cupboard with a lateral filing system or a side filing cabinet. If you are unsure what type of suspension file you check to see how existing files are suspended, if documents are accessed from the top then you’ll need standard suspension files. If they are accessed from the side you will need to purchase lateral suspension files.
